Invigorating Freshness

We cast an eye at a massive trove of CalArts student films, and share new learning resources for up-and-coming filmmakers.

It’s Mother’s Day this weekend in the States, but once again, our patriarchal society has upstaged the holiday with news of Father. I refer, of course, to the new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, the first American leader of the Catholic Church. Fresh off the nonsense of America potentially tariffing foreign films, let me say that I think it would be fine if my countrymates took a step back from the world stage for a bit. Alas.

I wish the best for Leo, but he has big shoes to fill, and more than anything, we want to know whether he will continue his predecessor’s policy of championing scripted short films ?

Topical intro out of the way, we’ve got a bevy of interesting links to share in this week’s newsletter, including promoting fresh work from one of our team, plagiarism drama between a Sundance artist and the former First Daughter, and a terrific new alum film in multiplexes. Then, we highlight the recent release of CalArts student animations, and close out with the week’s S/W Official Selections. Let’s start the show!
